How to Play Chess - Beginner's Guide
New to chess? Learn the fundamentals of the world's most popular strategy game.
Board Setup
Chess is played on an 8×8 board with 64 squares that alternate between light and dark colours.
- Board Position: Place the board with a light square in the bottom-right corner
- Queen Placement: "Queen on her colour" - White queen on light square, Black queen on dark square
- Starting Position: Each player starts with 16 pieces
- Files & Ranks: Columns are called "files" (a-h), rows are called "ranks" (1-8)
Game Objective
The goal is to checkmate your opponent's king - attack it so it cannot escape.
- Check: When the king is under attack
- Checkmate: When the king is in check and has no legal moves
- Stalemate: When a player has no legal moves but isn't in check (draw)
- Draw: Game ends in a tie (various conditions)
How Chess Pieces Move
Pawn (8 each)
- Moves forward one square
- Can move two squares on first move
- Captures diagonally forward
- Promotes to any piece when reaching end
Rook (2 each)
- Moves any distance horizontally or vertically
- Cannot jump over pieces
- Worth approximately 5 points
Knight (2 each)
- Moves in "L" shape: 2+1 squares
- Only piece that can jump over others
- Worth approximately 3 points
Bishop (2 each)
- Moves diagonally any distance
- Cannot jump over pieces
- Worth approximately 3 points
Queen (1 each)
- Most powerful piece
- Combines rook and bishop moves
- Worth approximately 9 points
King (1 each)
- Moves one square in any direction
- Most important piece - losing it ends the game
- Cannot move into check
Special Moves
Castling
- King and rook move simultaneously
- King moves 2 squares toward rook
- Rook moves to square king crossed
- Neither king nor rook can have moved
- No pieces between them
- King cannot be in check
En Passant
- Special pawn capture
- Opponent's pawn moves 2 squares
- Your pawn can capture "in passing"
- Must be done immediately

Time Controls
- Blitz: 5 minutes or less per player
- Rapid: 10-60 minutes per player
- Classical: 60+ minutes per player
- Increment time added after each move when specified
- Running out of time results in immediate loss
- Insufficient material + time forfeit = draw

- Creating multiple accounts
- Sharing account credentials
- Deliberately losing games (sandbagging)
- False reporting of technical issues
